Adidas Copa Mundial Review

Yes! After 3 weeks of waiting here is my review on the adidas Copa Mundial. This shoe is great, and if you’d like to pick it up, I’m not going to leave links but you can pick them at almost any sporting goods retailer that carries soccer cleats/football boots.

Box and Extras

Inside the box, you get tissue paper, and that’s about it. Oh and you also get the shoes.

Comfort

As for the comfort of the adidas Copa Mundial, this shoe was actually slightly disappointing. I was expecting it to be extremely comfortable, which I suppose one could argue it is, but there was one major problem with the shoe that made it a shoe that I couldn’t get completely used to. The area in between my ankle and my heel is very skinny, and this is a very rare thing. Because of this, the stiff white part of the adidas branding on the back of the shoe ramming into this area every time I took a step.

After about 1 and a half hour, I get used to it, but games last 1 and half hours. The season is right around the corner for me and I’m still deciding who will make their debut on the pitch… Other than that though, the shoe was extremely comfortable. The soft flexible upper felt really nice on your foot but I did experience a little bit of roll over. Not so much, but definitely noticeable because when you are making quick changes of direction or cuts, you will notice this. Some people say that the adidas Copa Mundial is bad because it’s heavy, and that’s not true. It’s not heavy, and even if it was, “heavy” boots don’t affect how fast you run. I made a video about this and you can click here to watch it. Overall though, the Copa Mundial did not meet expectations, but keep in mind, mine were quite high. SIZING: If you want to buy the adidas Copa Mundial, make sure to buy 1 size down. I’m normally an 8 US but my pair of Copa’s is a 7US. This shoe runs small, and it will stretch tremendously. If you don’t beleive me, go to your local adidas store, and ask for your normal size, and 1 size below it. Trust me.

Upper

The upper of the Adidas Copa Mundial is very very good. The kangaroo leather all around the entire shoe is very soft and plush, and it’s one of the best, if not the best on the market right now. Even with all the new releases recently I think that if you want a soft leather upper, something like the adidas Copa mundial will give you a really good feel for the ball and it definitely can go up against something like a Copa 17.1 or Tiempo Legend 6.

Right out of the box, you can feel how soft they are. Even after just one playing session the upper feels soft. Every single time you play in them, it just gets softer and softer. I don’t really know how it works. It gets me excited just thinking about after using one pair for the whole season, how soft they will be 30 seconds after the final whistle of your last game.

Traction

As for the traction of the Copa’s it’s really nothing special. The soleplate is perfect for this style of shoe, and while the stud configuration as well as the conical ness  of the them has aged, it really still is a good stud pattern.

IMG_2263

The soleplate is quite thick, which might concern you, especially if you’ve seen my review on the Adidas X 15+ Primeknit, you’ll know that I absolutely despise thick and stiff soleplates. This soleplate is both of those things, and before you fear the worse, hear me out. I like this soleplate. WOAH! I know. This soleplate is thicker than the one found on the X 15 line but not stiffer. I think that after 1 playing session you get used to the soleplate and you forget entirely you’re wearing shoes. The thickness of the soleplate makes it perfect for if you’d like to lace up with them on real grass, but if you have turf or artifical grass near you, not to fear, this soleplate and stud pattern is very friendly for those surfaces as well.

Touch

As for the touch on Copa’s…. it’s amazing. The leather upper is something that I have never experienced. I always used thin synthetics, more specifically Mercurials, like the Vapor X and Superfly IV. I was a big mercurial fan. I thought, the thinner the touch the better right? No, old me, you’re wrong.

IMG_2259

The leather touch you get with this boot is one of a kind, for me at least. I had never used a leather shoe, and this blew me away.  The touch is thick and padded, but when you’re juggling, it feels like you’re juggling barefoot. It feels like you have a thin layer of skin on your foot. I know this probably sounds crazy to you, but it really is fantastic.

Shooting

Shooting with the Copa Mundial, as I’ve stated 100,000 other times, is nothing special. There are no shoes that I have used yet that enhance shooting ability or feel.

IMG_2256

I did feel though, that with a thicker upper, it was more pleasant to shoot really hard knuckleballs or laced shots. That’s why the Copa Mundial get’s an above average grade in this regard.

Protection

The protection that the adidas Copa Mundial provides, is second to none. The thick, padded leather upper was impeccable. I could get stomped on at full force with SG metal studs, and it would not hurt nearly as much as getting accidentally nipped while wearing the Nike Mercurial Vapor X.

IMG_2266

The protection was phenomenal, and the deep lacing system down the middle added some protection as well.

Aesthetics

As for how the adidas Copa Mundial looks, I think it’s great. It has a really classic design with the black upper and white adidas stripes, along with the leather fold over flap tongue.

You can fold it over, or leave it up, like I prefer, and it still looks great.

Overall Rating

Overall, if you’re on a slightly lower budget, and you’d like to lace up in something with a leather upper, or something with a classic look and feel to it, the adidas Copa Mundial is honestly one of your best options. You can find these for less than $120 pretty regularly, and that is just an incredible value.
